Present participle and verbal adjective

Be careful to make difference between participle present and verbal adjective. Their spelling does not follow the same rule. Participle past is always invariable and express an action: des fillettes tremblant de peur.

Meanwhile verbal adjective indicates a state and follows link rules: des fillettes tremblantes.

Spelling from participle present and verbal adjective is not always the same. For instance:

Present participleVerbal adjective

convainquantconvaincant
différantdifférent
divergeantdivergent
équivalantéquivalent
fatiguantfatigant
négligeantnégligent
provoquantprovocant

Also note different spelling for some nouns, different from present participle:

Present participleNoun

fabriquantun fabricant
présidantun président
résidantun résident

Present participleVerbal adjectiveNom

More than ever, you have to understand the role and the meaning of all words in the sentence before to put links.
